About the Keynote Speaker

INTERNET CRIME AND INTERNET SAFETY

Doug Price, MBA
Assistant Special Agent in Charge
Los Angeles Field Office
Federal Bureau of Investigation

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Doug Price will give an in-depth view of the risks and dangers that the internet poses for children, who are a vulnerable population and at greater risk of harm by online predators. The presentation will focus on the FBI’s Innocent Images National Initiative (IINI), which is a multi agency initiative to combat the proliferation of child pornography/child sexual exploitation on the internet and computers. The IINI provides centralized coordination and analysis of research and case information that by its very nature is national and international in scope, requiring unprecedented coordination with local, state and international governments.

Patricia Costales, LCSW, Executive Director for The Guidance Center, will join Mr. Price at the conclusion of the presentation to give insight as to the cultural and clinical implications of these issues in clinical practice.

About the Breakout Sessions

All registrants will attend two of the following three breakout sessions -- one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

  • Legal, Ethical and Practical Issues: Introduction to Telehealth

    Marlene M. Maheu, Ph.D.
    Executive Director
    TeleMental Health Institute

This presentation will provide a glimpse of new vistas for creative practitioners who are curious about how they might work with technology to deliver services in a cutting-edge, innovative way. The presenter will define telehealth terminology, introduce basic concepts, risks and benefits and review the Online Clinical Practice (OCP) model, a shortcut to understanding legal and ethical issues for working in the technological age.

    CEU Credit: 2.5 hours

  • Wired Teens: Development Implications of Living Life Online

    Kaveri Subrahmanyam, PhD
    Professor of Psychology
    Cal State Univeristy, Los Angeles
    Associate Director
    Children’s Digital Media Center

This workshop will provide a brief overview of the variety of e-technologies that are popular among adolescents as well as briefly describe the core developmental issues that adolescents are faced with such as sexuality, identity, and intimacy. The session will address how adolescents’ use of these newer technologies may be related to their well being and that adolescents’ online and offline worlds are psychologically connected. Using research from the Children’s Digital Media Center UCLA/CSULA, this presentation will also show that young people use online forums such as chat rooms, blogs, and social networking sites to help with adjusting to their sexuality, formulating their identity and interconnecting with peers and other significant others in their lives.

  • Cyber Bullying

    Jonathan King, MBA
    Director of Professional Development
    and Community Outreach
    i-SAFE, Inc.

The Internet has become a primary means through which our youth communicate. While it is a valuable resource, the internet also has a dark and potentially dangerous side. It is increasingly becoming a vehicle for hate crimes, fraud, and predation of children and youth. This situation presents new challenges for policy, practice and future research related to child abuse and neglect. This workshop will discuss cyber bullying, harassment, child abuse and neglect research findings as well as new, emerging legislation, policies and practice associated with the rapidly expanding use of the Internet by children and youth. Participants will gain knowledge about current cyber bullying research and statistics, learn to identify the potential for harassment during online communication (and associated risks), learn about available resources in the community when a child is being cyber bullied or stalked and the consequences for those who participate in online harassment.
