In My Backyard
Season 2: Episode #11: Working With Children Who Have Suicidal Ideation
/

Today’s podcast discusses suicide, which might be painful and triggering for some listeners. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, or are worried that someone you love might be suicidal, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. Help is available.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2019 suicide was the 10th leading cause of death overall in the United States, representing 47,500 lost lives. This is two and a half times more than the number of deaths by homicide.

In this episode, Patricia speaks with Viviana Pereyra, a therapist in The Guidance Center’s Compton Clinic who works directly with children who have active suicidal ideation. Viviana serves clients in the Full Service Partnership, or FSP, Program, an intensive program for the agency’s most troubled children and families. The model of this program is “whatever it takes”, offering multidisciplinary services as often as the client requires it to avoid hospitalization or out-of-home placement and to ultimately reach stabilization.
