World Mental Health Day is a time to reflect on what mental health means to us and how we can build stronger systems of care for those who need it most.

The theme for 2025, “Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reminds us that care is especially critical in times of instability, trauma, and loss. When crises occur, mental health needs often rise while access to support becomes harder to find.

At The Guidance Center, we see the impact of these moments every day. Families navigating grief, community violence, or financial instability often need more than therapy… they need connection, stability, and hope. Our clinicians, case managers, and community partners walk alongside families through these challenges, ensuring that help is available when it’s needed most.

What Mental Health Means to Us

We asked our Guidance Center team to share their reflections on mental health: what it means to them, how they care for their own well-being, and what they hope others remember this World Mental Health Day.

Each of these reflections shows the power of vulnerability and connection…simple reminders that healing takes shape in many forms, from the courage to ask for help to the simple act of showing up for others.

Whether it’s taking time to check in with ourselves, leaning on a trusted friend, or learning to embrace change, these moments of awareness help us stay grounded when life feels uncertain. They remind us that caring for our mental health is not a one-time action, but a continual practice of compassion…for ourselves, for others, and for our community.

Our Guidance staff carry this understanding into their daily work, offering families hope and stability during difficult times.

Why Access to Mental Health Matters

In our community, many families are navigating challenges such as grief, violence, housing instability, and other crises that can take a deep emotional toll. Without accessible care, these experiences can lead to lasting impacts on mental health. But with the right support, healing is possible.

Through our school-based therapy programs, community partnerships, and our soon-to-open Family Resource Center, we’re working to create spaces where families can find connection, resilience, and hope.

Caring for Ourselves & Our Community

Healing begins with small, intentional steps… for ourselves and for our community.

Here are a few ways to care for your well-being and help others do the same:

  • Check in with yourself: Take a free mental health screening through Mental Health America.

  • Practice mindfulness: Pause with our Mindfulness and Meditation Series created by Dr. Amy Morse and Dr. Tatyana Clark.

  • Advocate for youth: Register here for our Youth Mental Health First Aid training on Friday, October 24th from 9:00 AM-3:30 PM to learn how to support young people experiencing challenges.

  • Find support: Explore the Mental Health Coalition Resource Library for a directory of mental health tools to help you or someone you love.

  • Give back: Help us expand programs and services for our families in need by donating here to support our new Family Resource Center.

Together, we can create a community where everyone has access to compassion, care, and connection.

A Final Moment to Reflect

Take a moment today to ask yourself: What does mental health mean to you?

Whether through self-care, connection, or reaching out for help, every step toward understanding is a step toward healing.
