The Guidance Center is thrilled to participate in the online giving event, Long Beach Gives, joining over 230 inspiring nonprofit organizations on a mission to make a difference! Set for Thursday, September 21, 2023, this citywide movement is a 24-hour day dedicated to help raise awareness about nonprofits and the important role they play in our community.

This year, your support through Long Beach Gives will fund specialty suicide assessment and treatment training for mental health professionals at The Guidance Center and in the community, as well as non-mental health direct care staff in the community (youth counselors, receptionists, etc.) As a result of your generosity, every client will receive this vital assessment during their very first visit with us.

In the last ten years, rates of suicide and suicide attempts have increased dramatically. In Long Beach, unintentional and intentional self-harm is among the top 10 leading causes of death (CDPH). Limited access to mental health care, heightened use of social media, poverty, and community violence have all played a role in this alarming increase and was magnified even further by the isolation of the pandemic.

Assisting and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) is a research-based training model that helps behavioral health professionals and nonprofessionals feel confident navigating challenging conversations and offers strategies for providing compassionate care to people at risk for suicide. The goal is to address the pain the young person is experiencing and to reduce hospitalizations.

Join us on September 21st for Long Beach Gives and be a part of this life-changing movement. Your donation isn’t just a gift; it’s a lifeline. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our community’s mental health and well-being.
